Las Vegas is where every drive on this corridor starts or ends. The valley floor sits at about 2,000 feet, ringed by mountains that collect weather the city itself never sees. A clear, calm morning on the Strip tells you almost nothing about Mountain Pass to the southwest or the Virgin River Gorge to the northeast, because both of those places sit higher, sit in different terrain, and answer to different storm tracks. What Las Vegas weather does tell you is real: valley wind means crosswinds on the open freeway, valley rain means slick roads and slowdowns on the urban stretch, and valley heat in summer means your cooling system and your water supply matter before you leave town.
As a driving base, the city is the corridor's full service hub. Fuel, food, tires, towing, and lodging exist at nearly every exit, and the freeway through town is wide and well lit. That abundance ends quickly in both directions. Southbound, services thin out past Sloan and Jean on the way to Primm and the California climb. Northbound, you pass through North Las Vegas and the edge of the valley and then commit to a long, open run toward Mesquite and the Gorge. Check the live verdict for the segment you are actually driving, not the sky above the Strip, and leave with a full tank even when the trip looks short.
Getting around: I-15 runs the length of the valley from the south end by the airport and the Strip to the north end past downtown. Use the segment verdict for your direction of travel, because conditions south toward Primm and north toward Mesquite often have nothing in common.
